Car checks that will save your long-awaited holiday

We’re all ready for a holiday after the events of the past year, but before you set off for your relaxing, or adventure-filled, holiday, be sure to read through our list of car checks that will save your long-awaited holiday.

Check Your Oil and Water Levels

Luckily, modern cars don’t consume gallons of oil like the old (un)reliables used to, but this may not necessarily be a good thing. We usually only pay attention to our oil levels when the oil light appears on our dashboards, which means that it’s unlikely that you have checked your car’s oil or radiator water levels recently.

Of course, it is incredibly important that you check these levels when the car is parked on a flat service and has cooled down. This means waiting at least an hour or so after your engine has been turned off before you check the water and oil. Once your car has eventually cooled down, it’s a good idea to add a little antifreeze to your water.

Check your wheels and tyres

The last thing that you want after setting off on your long-awaited trip is to be suddenly halted by a puncture or blowout. It’s very important to check all four wheels for damage, cracks, gouges and bulges before you set off. After doing this initial check, it’s also a good idea to check the tread of the tyres and your tyre pressure.

Cover your car

In the unfortunate event of a breakdown, you want to ensure that you are covered. So, we encourage you to check that your car’s breakdown cover is up to date before you start planning your journey. It’s also important to remember that when travelling abroad, some policies will only cover you for a set number of days. Make sure that you are fully informed about the policy you have in place to avoid being stranded on the motorway.

Clear out the car

Whether you are planning a family trip, a couples trip, or a friends trip, you’ll want to make sure that your car has been cleared out before you start loading it up with suitcases, toys and cameras. While this may seem like an obvious step for all of those over packers out there, clearing out your car can lead to fewer fuel fill-ups for all.
